Deep Tissue Massage
A deep tissue massage that is foundationally based around Swedish massage except more pressure is used and the main focus is on the deeper layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (connective tissue).
Whether you sit or stand in prolonged positions or engage in physical activity you will welcome the many benefits from deep tissue massage.
Deep tissue massage is especially helpful for aches and pains that are caused from muscular strain, cramps and general tightness often felt in the neck, shoulders, back and legs.
Massage is applied to both the superficial and deeper layers of muscles, tendons and fascia (connective tissue) and other structures. Specialised techniques such as cross grain frictions (movement across muscle fibres), compression, kneading, stretching and frictions are used. The therapist uses their elbows, forearms, hands, fists and fingers. Also Basalt stones (cooled lava stone) may be used as a tool for optimal penetration of a muscle.
During the massage the therapist will aim to gradually break down knots and adhered tissues releasing tension from muscles, tendons and ligaments to reduce pain and improve range of movement. Deep tissue massage improves lymphatic drainage which helps to flush metabolic wastes such as lactic acid and uric acid from your muscles.
The physiological effects of deep tissue massage are exceptionally beneficial for improving circulation, increasing the level of fresh oxygen and nutrients in your blood and decreasing muscle toxins.
There are many other benefits of deep tissue massage;
- Relieves muscle spasms
