Reiki is a gentle form of natural healing which treats the whole of the individual and not just the symptoms. It’s primary function is to restore balance to your mind, body and spirit. It is an extremely relaxing and soothing experience which helps to eliminate stress, promote relaxation and help the body’s own natural healing.
The practice of Reiki is an original method of healing, developed by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan early in the 20th century. The Japanese word Reiki means “universal life energy”. Reiki is not part of any type of religion or belief system and you don’t have to be ill to benefit from Reiki.
Reiki helps to harmonise and bring the body back into balance, promoting the body’s own natural healing. Reiki balances the energy fields working on the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual levels.
A Reiki practitioner is attuned by a Reiki Master allowing the gift and ability to channel the ‘universal energy’ through their own hands. They are trained to detect and alleviate problems of energy flow on the physical, emotional and spiritual levels.
Reasons for Reiki Healing
Illness, pain and recovery are some of the reasons why many will seek Reiki healing. Others desire Reiki for relaxation, to help with stress and anxiety. It helps some people to feel more able to cope and move on when they feel stuck. Some want help during challenging and difficult times such as grieving or redundancy. However, you don’t need a reason to receive Reiki, just wanting it is enough!
What happens during a Reiki treatment?
The recipient remains clothed and lies on a couch or sits on a chair depending which is most comfortable. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively on or above the body, following a treatment pattern that covers the 7 main chakras (energy centres of the body). Areas of specific pain or illness are also included. The Reiki energy is channelled through the practitioner’s hands towards the body of the client. The practitioner is guided by their intuition and training.
Apart from feelings of deep relaxation and calmness, feelings of warmth, coldness and tingling may be felt by the recipient. Experiences of deep emotion, visions of vivid colours and images are often reported. Reiki is a subjective experience therefore everyone will have their own unique experience.
Many people find that Reiki gives them the time they need to focus on their own well-being.
Being a complementary therapy, Reiki works effectively alongside orthodox healthcare and natural remedies, expanding treatment options. It is being used in various settings which include private practices, complementary therapy centres, GP surgeries, hospitals and hospices.
